At the end of Michelob Ultra's Super Bowl LX ad, Greg, the guy who's always stuck buying the rounds, finally wins. He goes to pay, and the bartender says it's already taken care of. She points to an empty stool. On the bar in front of it sits an empty glass of Michelob Ultra Zero.
That's the seat of the ski instructor played by Kurt Russell. The pro. The mentor. The guy who knew how the game worked. And the glass he left behind had no alcohol in it.
No announcement. No hero shot. Just the most experienced person in the story choosing zero, and nobody treating it like a big deal.
The rest of the night was the old script
Anheuser-Busch was the biggest advertiser of the game, with two and a half minutes of airtime. Bud Light's spot, "Keg," put Peyton Manning, Post Malone and Shane Gillis at a wedding where a keg breaks loose and rolls down a hill, and everyone, the bride included, chases it. It came with $60 off a Bud Light keg. Svedka became the first vodka brand in more than 30 years to run a national Super Bowl ad, with dancing robots.
The message was the same as every year. Want to celebrate? Drink. Want to loosen up? Drink. Want to belong? Drink.
There were cracks in it, though. Liquid Death, which sells canned water dressed up like beer, had a spot of its own. And there was that empty Ultra Zero glass.
Why does it matter who holds the zero?
For years, the non-alcoholic drink has been the consolation prize: the thing you order if you're pregnant, driving, in recovery or just not fun. That's still how TV plays it, as I wrote in The Poison Is the Experience.
This ad put it in the hand of the guy in charge. That's a quiet shift, and it's a lot closer to real life. Most people aren't choosing alcohol as much as they think. They're inheriting it. It's the default in the room, so it becomes the default in their week, and more and more people are noticing.
It's the same brand that Landman mocks as "fake beer." On the biggest ad night of the year, it put its zero in the mentor's seat.
Temperates Takeaway
The ads haven't caught up to real life yet. But the biggest beer brands know something is changing. They just haven't made it the headline. If alcohol is your default, notice that. Swapping in zero sometimes isn't a statement. It's just what the smartest guy at the bar did.
I take apart one of these every Sunday. The signup is right below.
