Angela pulls up to a nursing home with her trunk packed full of alcohol. Not a bottle or two. Full. The show frames it as generosity, a burst of life in a place that needs one.

When a nurse raises a concern about mixing alcohol with the residents' medications, she becomes the problem. The buzzkill. The one standing between old people and joy.

Alcohol gets coded as compassion. Caution gets coded as cruelty.

That scene is Landman in miniature. Nobody in the show argues for drinking. Nobody has to. That's how a default works.

Every pushback gets shut down

I started watching Landman and realized I was tracking two plots at once: the show, and the alcohol. Beer, wine, liquor, cocktails, every category gets airtime, and almost every time someone questions it, the question gets dismissed.

Ariana grabs two Modelos, hands one to Cooper and starts drinking hers. Cooper asks whether she should be drinking while she's nursing. Ariana tells him beer helps breast milk production, a myth that's been debunked for years. Conversation over.

Tommy orders a Michelob Ultra, the regular one at 4.2%, and calls it "fake beer." Angela tells him he's no fun for choosing it. So the show even polices which drinking counts. Drink lighter and you're boring. Drink more and you're honest.

The college version is the same code. The quarterback tells Ainsley she's too good for keg beer and needs a "proper" one from his truck. It isn't about taste. It's status.

The brands are in on it

The Modelo isn't a coincidence. International Promotions, the agency that handles Modelo's placements, published a post bragging that it secured the bottle an extended scene in Landman, in Angela's hand while she plays pool and dances. VinePair's beer columnist noticed Michelob Ultra's "relentless screen time" and called out the incongruity, down to Tommy's line: "I quit drinking, I'll stick with beer."

Modelo's brand story is grit and fighting spirit. So is Ariana's. The beer doesn't just sit in the scene. It becomes part of who she is.

The contradiction nobody mentions

Angela is written as intensely health-conscious. She tosses the Pop-Tarts, makes fruit parfaits, and trains hard at the gym in episode after episode. None of that lines up with how much she drinks, and the show never notices. Alcohol is the one health choice that never has to match the rest.

Monty has had multiple heart attacks, and bourbon is still part of his world. Nobody comments.

Who does this hit hardest?

The people this hits hardest don't think it's about them. Functional people. Social people. People who work, parent and hold it together, and who are quietly dealing with worse sleep and more anxiety than they used to, but would never connect it to drinking, because nothing about their drinking looks dramatic.

It's the same move TV made in The Poison Is the Experience, where the person without a drink becomes the joke, and in Love Is Blind, where the one sober contestant got cut. Landman just does it with a trunk full of bottles and a straight face.

Temperates Takeaway

Entertainment makes it feel like life. Brands make it feel like identity. And you're left thinking it was your idea. Next time you watch, count how often a question about drinking gets treated as the problem. Then notice who gets called no fun.

I'm going to go watch another episode with a Partake Blonde in hand.

I take apart one of these every Sunday. The signup is right below.
